Updates to the PCT Applicant’s Guide for Canada

The PCT Applicant's Guide was recently updated to clarify that when entering the national phase in Canada, if the corresponding international application has not yet been published, a copy of the international application (including the request) must be submitted to the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) at the time of entry into the national phase.  A translation of these documents into English or French is also required.

If the corresponding international application has been published, then a copy of the international application need not be submitted to CIPO.

The Canadian Intellectual Property Office's section of the PCT Applicant's Guide can be found here:  http://www.wipo.int/pct/guide/en/gdvol2/annexes/ca.pdf

Remembrance Day

We remember the men and women who served and sacrificed.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
We will remember them.

Revisions to the Manual of Patent Office Practice (MOPOP)

The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) has revised the Manual of Patent Office Practice (MOPOP) to remove all references to "representative".  This change reflects a recent change in the Patent Act, to remove the requirement that non-Canadian applicants appoint a representative in Canada.  The full details are available here:  http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/cipointernet-internetopic.nsf/eng/wr04248.html

Rising Star

We are thrilled to announce that Adrienne Bieber McNeil has been named as a "Rising Star" in the 2017 issue of Expert Guides - Rising Stars. More information can be found here: https://www.expertguides.com/experts/abm-intellectual-property/mcneil-adrienne-bieber/lahqvmfx

Patent Landscape Report

The Canadian Intellectual Property Office has released a "Patent Landscape Report" on patenting activity in the shale oil and gas sub-sector of the oil and gas sector. Interestingly (though perhaps not surprisingly), patenting activity in this industry sub-sector increased 188% between 2000 and 2012. The full report can be found here: http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/cipointernet-internetopic.nsf/eng/h_wr04093.html
